Arsenal gun down Chelsea

Robin van Persie is world class once more as Arsenal beat Chelsea

The last game of October was a very interesting one, away at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. The month started on a low with a 2-1 loss against Tottenham, but since then three league victories and an injury time win in the Champions League saw Arsenal gain confidence after what had been the worst start to a season in a very long time. The Chelsea game was always going to be a special one with two rivals facing each other, but now it had another incentive: this game was going to prove if Arsenal had really re-found their form. The stats were against The Gunners as well, having not won any of their last eight league away games.

Arsenal went 1-0 down by Frank Lampard, and after Robin van Persie had scored the equalizer, John Terry gave Chelsea the lead again. Both goals were conceded because of bad defending. This really seems to be a big issue. Andre Santos was looking poor when he could not prevent Mata crossing the ball to Frank Lampard for the first goal. And near Lampard, Mertesacker lost the challenge in the air against the Chelsea man. And with John Terry's goal, Mertesacker was looking unlucky once more. That being said, Arsenal were 2-1 down at half time but it had been quite an entertaining first half so you would bet on it that the second half would bring more great football. And it certainly did.

Right after the break Andre Santos was able to score the equalizer just four minutes into the second half. With that goal he has already scored more goals for Arsenal in two months than Gael Clichy did in six years. Although his defending might seem a bit weak at times, he sure knows how to push forward from the left back position. Let's just focus on that, as I am not in the mood to play down today's result any further! Further goals followed as Walcott got Arsenal ahead for the first time after 55 minutes, but Mata equalized for The Blues to get the scores level once more with just 10 minutes to go.

That was not it. You could sense something wonderful was going to happen. The feeling that this was finally going to be our day for real took over. And someone else took the editor's seat on the pitch. I caught myself willing to type 'as usual' in front of my next line, but I chose not to eventually. Robin van Persie stood up once more and he took charge. With two great goals in the last ten minutes he is now officially the Premiership's top scorer. Over 2011 as a whole Van Persie has now scored 28 goals in 27 games. That is just phenomenal. World class. We might as well give this year's Golden Ball to Van Persie straight away, skip the voting. Yes I know Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. But to have the ability to stand out the way Van Persie does, not only in a footballing way but also captaining his side through one of the toughest periods for the club in decades, that is just not human. He has been able to avoid injuries quite well so far, and now we can all finally see how good this man really is. Most of the people reading this are probably Gooners, but if you are a neutral supporter reading this, or even supporting one of Arsenal's rivals, you have to admit that he is easily one of the best players in the world.
