Not how I wanted to start 2012 |
| |
The loss to Fulham yesterday at Craven Cottage in the final minutes of the game made sure the start to my year was not what I hoped for.
Yesterday the game started very promising with a much better Arsenal side in the first half. Fulham were pushed all the way back and we created a huge number of chances. However, the finishing has been largely wasteful and at half-time, we should have got more than just one goal. It just felt like it was going to be one of those days. Especially when former Arsenal defender Senderos brought down Gervinho which should have been a penalty. Once more the referee did not give us a penalty after a frustrating game at QPR on Saturday, where Arsenal should also have been awarded a penalty on two occasions. Nevertheless, we should also have won the game without the referee’s help, it’s not an excuse in my opinion. The real problem yesterday was the finishing, and Djourou’s sending off. Another full-back that is not available for the next game. Who will we bring now? I hope Thierry Henry also knows how to play right-back because we might need hem there now. Fulham felt Arsenal were unable to finish off the game, and after Djourou’s sending off they found themselves a new belief they were actually able to avoid losing this game. They kept pushing and pushing and were rewarded with the equalizer with five minutes left to play. Squillaci, who had just been brought on following Djourou’s dismissal, was not looking good there. Now I won’t start about how I think about Squillaci, put that was just poor defending. And then you could feel it coming, sad enough. Fulham were running riot and were going all the way to get the winner, and they eventually did when Zamora found the net with just seconds left to play. Instead of dropping points at the end of the game, this time Martin Jol’s side struck lucky. And to be honest, it was not undeserved. They just showed they wanted it more than we did. But okay, this blog about the game is enough. We might not have had the best start to the new year, but there is a lot of football to be played. Henry is coming home, and Robin van Persie is just 36 goals away from equalling Alan Shearer’s record in scoring goals in a calendar year. Next up is Leeds United for the FA Cup. Although it will be a hard game considering the defensive options available, it will be an important game. I still hope we win the league, but it is not looking very likely anymore, we all have to agree on that. So let’s go all the way in this year’s FA Cup then. |
