The King is back |
| |
His comeback truly was the stuff dreams are made of when Thierry Henry scored the winner last night with a trademark finish.
A real buzz of excitement was there at the Emirates last night. Arsenal were facing Leeds for the FA Cup. But to all the fans that was just nice to know. There honestly was only one thing they and all the spectators at home were waiting to see. The return of the King. And he was there, on the bench. Arsenal started the game in a good mood with lots of offensive play and there were several chances for Chamakh and Arshavin. Especially the Russian was looking good in the first half, despite his passes and shooting were lacking a bit of quality. But he was looking a lot better than he has been recently. Something that did not change last night was Arsenal’s luck with injuries to their defenders. After a little over half an hour of play, Francis Coquelin was brought off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Another one. In terms of defenders Arsenal are now without Sagna, Gibbs, Santos, Jenkinson, Vermaelen and Djourou. Per Mertesacker was also missing due to a virus. Wenger was forced to bring on Nico Yennaris, who made just his second appearance in the Arsenal first team. But I have to say, what he had to do, he did very decent. Arsenal were the much better side through the whole of the first half but were constantly failing to convert one of their chances into a goal. And everyone will remember last year’s Third Round against Leeds, where it took a replay to get past the Championship side. Something really good was needed up front, and Robin van Persie was not available last night. Our top scorer was not there. However, our all-time top scorer was... Right after the break Thierry Henry started his warming-up routine, which was welcomed by a huge roar of appreciation by everyone there at the Emirates. That was exactly what we all wanted to see. With 22 minutes left that moment everyone was waiting and hoping for was there. Theo Walcott came on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Marouane Chamakh was brought off for Thierry Henry. He hugged Chamakh on the sideline and entered the pitch, greeted with a very warm welcome. This was all wonderful to watch, goose bumps stuff. But it was all going to be even better. With 12 minutes to go, wearing the number 12 in the year 2012 Henry received the ball from Alex Song, turned and slotted the ball coolly into the bottom far corner to score his 12th ever goal against Leeds. It would also mean his 227th goal for Arsenal. Social media like Twitter exploded, just as the Emirates did. Everyone around the world supporting Arsenal had tears in their eyes and became emotional. And I won’t lie, it happened to me as well. It was just the stuff of dreams. A miracle. One of the best moments I have ever seen. If Thierry Henry wasn’t already a legend to you, he certainly must be now! But let’s get back to work, as I am writing this at the office. I hope I can keep my focus here, as I am still thinking about last night... |
