Vermaelen extends his contract |
| |
It was announced today that Thomas Vermaelen has extended his contract with The Gunners.
Vermaelen has made 54 appearances in the Arsenal first team so far and has been impressive in the games he played.
The Belgian centre back had a great first season here after arriving from Ajax in 2009. After that injuries made him spend more time off the pitch than on it. However, Vermaelen is said to be close to match fitness again.
Arsene Wenger was quoted on Arsenal's official website saying: "We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract. Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that. Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club."
Vermaelen's response to his new deal was also quoted on Arsenal.com: "I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal. I always had the intention to stay here. I feel there is a big belief in me from the Club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed. Arsenal is a fantastic Club. We have great supporters, we’re doing well financially and we are playing with some quality young players now and they will develop, which is very good for the future."
I am very, very happy with Vermaelen signing the new deal. I see more and more players actually loving the club lately. You have Szczesny and Wilshere who always shows a lot of emotion, but also players like Frimpong, Mertesacker and Gervinho are regularly showing their love and commitment to the club. It is great to see Vermaelen join that list by extending his deal and praising the club while doing so. Hopefully this will spur other players such as Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott on to extend their deals with Arsenal as well. |
