The boss has updated the press with the latest team and injury news ahead of this Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Burnley.
Of course, Mertesacker is out as he is suspended following his red card in the game against Chelsea earlier this week. Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla both won’t feature in our title-defending FA Cup quest this game yet. However, both are progressing well according to Arsène Wenger, as he was quoted on Arsenal’s official website.
“Jack and Santi are progressing well but they are at least a few weeks away. But these two apart, it is just about competitiveness and match fitness.”
Danny Welbeck also seems close to returning to action for the first team. The medical staff have given him green light to train with the team again but Wenger has decided that the Englishman needs more game time before being involved in first team action again. Wenger feels he needs more match fitness as he has been out since April. Also, because he has been in training with the team for just one time at this moment, the Reserves fixture versus Stoke-U21’s is also still too soon as well.
A huge morale boost to the first team squad however is that both Francis Coquelin and Tomas Rosicky have recovered from injury and are declared fully fit and are likely to be involved in this weekend’s cup tie.
After two Cup-winning years, Arsenal are on the hunt for their third consecutive FA Cup win, and have eliminated Sunderland on their way so far. Whether Burnley will follow Sunderland out, will be decided this Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.
